This Saturday across the United States a united front will protest for Gay Rights, Equality for All. Though the night before is my birthday party I will be in downtown LA fighting to not be a second class citizen. To all our readers, I never intended for our blog to be about gay rights. But the issue is important to me and I feel I have to get the word out.
On Tuesday night I could not have been prouder than to elect an African American President. For the first time in a very long time I felt proud to be an American. Our nation had looked beyond color and at a person we felt, as a nation, could lead us into a prosperous future. Twenty minutes later I wanted to cry. Proposition 8 was gaining and in the end it looks like it will pass. The California Constitution will now read that people of the same sex cannot be married and cannot observe the same rights as heterosexual couples.
As I spent the next day at work, I am producing a TV show on genealogy, looking through historic photos of slaves and the civil war I started to cry. It hit me that it took hundreds of years for our nation to move past this racism and segregation. How long is it going to take our nation to accept the LGBT community? When will we look past a person’s sexuality and at the person? Any person who is gay is not less than a person. One homosexual person does not count as 1/16th of a person in the census. According to our national Constitution they are created equal so why does that not apply in every sense of the word?
It makes me extremely angry when people look down on others because they are different or not like them or not the norm. But each of you who will not even try to understand homosexuality I ask you this: All of you has at least one person in your life who is gay. Whether it be a friend, relative, co-worker you more than likely do. The next time you see that person, that gay person who do care about, look them in the eye and say: “You are not equal to me. You are less than me and do not deserve the same rights that I enjoy.” This is exactly what you are saying each and every day when you vote Yes on legislation like Proposition 8 or make a homophobic slurs. Remember that person’s face when you do these things because you are directly hurting that person you care about.
Today there will be a rally at the Mormon Church in West LA at 2pm. The No on Prop 8 supporters are going to ask the group who opposed them the most why? They would like to hear their opinions face to face. Personally I cannot attend due to my work. But if you are in LA and can make it please go. This is a peaceful event much like the rallies held around the state last night. Remember “Equality for all,” its the basis on which our country was formed.

I would also like to thank all those who volunteered to help spread the word on No on Prop 8 and all the continued supporters who are trying to keep the movement alive.
