Saturday night I spent the evening enjoying several bands at the El Rey Theater in LA.  Never having been to the El Rey I was surprised to find out it’s a former dance hall complete with recessed dance floor complete with floor track lighting.  Awesome.  To be honest I had planned on arriving late because I had no interest in seeing the two opening bands.  Luckily fate was kind and the first band started an hour late.  Talk about good luck.

Telekinesis is Michael Benjamin Lerner  who’s joined on stage by a three person band.  But Lerner sings lead while playing the drums.  Nope, it’s true.  That takes some talent. Having never even heard of Telekinesis I was skeptical at first but soon found myself head bopping along to their songs and being highly amused by their fun, charming, funny on stage banter.  Now they are no rival to the Queens of on stage banter, Tegan and Sara but Lerner’s funny wit definitely made Telekinesis memorable.  Considering this is their first tour…that’s a really good trait for a band to command.  Lerner’s on tour now.  Find tour dates and more information here.

Second up is the New Zealand band, Cut Off Your Hands.  Overall I found them interesting but they tend to have that problem bands routinely can suffer from…every song sounds eerily the same.  But what saves this band on stage is lead singer, Nick Johnston.  I have never seen someone jump around a stage as much as Johnston nor beat the hell out of a tambourine like him.  At times he simply beat the tambourine against the mic stand.  See clip below…you cannot look away!  Alternative Press named them one of the 100 Bands to Watch in this month’s issue.  Find more band info here.

Lastly the main act, Ra Ra Riot.  Oh how I love this band!  Not only does lead singer, Wesley Miles sing but he also runs around playing keys too.  Plus they have a cellist and violinist on stage who simply rock those instruments.  Ra Ra’s album, Rhumb Line was on every major music magazine’s list of one of the albums of the year.  Each song is complex, interesting, and yet still catchy.  Pay attention to Ghost Under Rocks, Too Too Too Fast, and A Manner to Act.  Only bad note was the disappointing sound engineering.  The lead mic was too low but each time they tried to bring up the volume there was major feedback.  For a few songs the lead vocals we’re drowned out by the band.   Ra Ra Riot is on tour now so try and check them out.  Below you’ll find a new unreleased song.  Enjoy!

And just for fun…this guy was really into each band.  He’d just start jumping at each song’s start. Cracked my shit up!

Last Night I had the opportunity to see Hesta Prynn, from Northern State, perform her new songs recorded with Civil Shepherd at Spaceland, in Silverlake, CA.  I had heard from our friends over at Earbudz that she would be performing and decided I had to check it out.  Plus the show was free!  Prynn did not disappoint.  Watching her perform is electric and you simply cannot help but look at her.  She clearly is totally into her music and loves performing.  Additionally Prynn’s new music departs from her work with Northern State but doesn’t go so much to the right that you don’t recognize it as Prynn’s work.

For now Hesta is on a short tour and has released a 5 Song Preview CD which you can purchase via her myspace page.  Plus check out Earbuz interview.  Oh and in a fun side note…Sara Quin oversaw the album.

Sorry I cut off the beginning of the song but take a look.  I guarantee you’ll be mesmerised!

cd-alwaysandforeverOver the past few years television networks have taken notice that music is a extremely important part of their shows.  The first major network to take notice of this idea was at the now debunked WB with their show Dawson’s Creek which followed up with the musically relevant show One Tree Hill.  OTH started the revolution but using smaller not as well known bands to enhance their show.  Next the OTH website included a detailed list of each song used in each episode including a scene description so users could easily find the exact song.  Plus you can then link to a source to buy the song or entire album.  Artists showcased include Andrew Bird, Carolina Lina, Franz Ferdinand, Meiko and The Fray.

coverpz5Flash forward a few years and suddenly Grey’s Anatomy comes along revamping ABC’s entire lineup.  Their musical director has excellent taste and continually uses indie bands to score Grey’s episodes.  Quickly following along their predecessors, Grey’s included a detailed website.  ABC followed along and now shows like Ugly Betty and Private Practice all have such music catalog ares to their websites.  CW now has almost every show, 90210, Privileged, Gossip Girl, using this musical ideas.  Find their music page here.

Personally I used these sites quite often to find new music.  I only wish more shows would follow this trend.  Especially show’s like all the CSI’s.  Normally their musical choices are more commercial bands but I’d still like to know the particular songs used etc.  Overall I still find One Tree Hill and Grey’s Anatomy to have some of the best music in their shows.  Of course I’m a tiny bit biased since Grey’s uses Tegan and Sara….oftenteganxxlargeincluding the very first episode.  Plus check out The L Word’s soundtracks.  They do not have a detailed website for each episode but some great seasonal soundtracks.

Last week Adam Carolla, one of my favorite radio morning show hosts in LA, announced that he would be going off the air. This was very sudden and abrupt and if I wasn’t living outside of LA I would be crushed that his voice wouldn’t wake me up on the radio alarm clock every morning anymore.

Adam made a conscious effort to keep his show alive; minus a pregnant Theresa Strasser and Bald Bryan. He set up http://carollaradio.com/ which is a podcast of an hour long show that he does, commercial free and sensor free.  the podcast is out of his home, and he will be getting co-hosts, like Dr. drew (mostly his friends) periodically.

I love Adam Carolla. He speaks his minds and is TOTALLY logical about many issues in America and our world today.

Please support Adam in listening to his podcasts everyday. It’s an hour long and is perfect for work (if you have headphones).

trustliePersonally I’m not the biggest fan of Fox’s reality television programs but I have to say I’m becoming a HUGE fan of their dramas.  House, Bones, Fringe, just to name a few, are great shows and this winter Fox launched a new drama, Lie To Me.

The premise of the show is that this doctor, after years of studies, has the ability to tell whenever anyone is lying.  The doctor, played by Tim Roth, is quite a character but imagine living a life where at times you have to pretend that you do not know you’re loved ones etc are lying to you. It’s a bit complicated and therefore he’s a bit odd.  Roth’s character runs an institute which hires out to individuals, companies, and governmental agencies when they need to know the truth.

I should mention that telling if someone is lying is completely based on facial expressions, body reflexes, and slight movements.  It’s an amazing science and the show does a good job of giving examples of certain behaviors.  For example if they tell a person is lying by say taking a step back from a podium then as the show goes into commercial you’ll see President Nixon doing the same gesture at the press conference where he denied all involved with Watergate.  The examples are fantastic and all relate to famous points in history where people have been proven to be lying.  ie. President Clinton during Monica Lewinsky, President G. W. Bush when asked about his presidency, Nixon during Watergate and many, many more. Check it out here.
